Enshrouded General Lore

Written by Sarah-Maree

The following is what I have for General Lore in Enshrouded. NOTE: MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS - I won’t share Lore content, but the titles may give things away, and the photos may reveal things. For an overview of what the heck I’m talking about, click here! Since I found most of these, they won’t glow red in the pictures, but they should glow red, like a fire, for you if you haven’t discovered them yet. If not, I’m sure the game developers would appreciate any feedback or hearing of any glitches, bugs, or malfunctions as this is an Early Access game - in that it isn’t fully finished and they are still working out some things. If you have any questions or tips for me, let me know in the comments! I’ll try to update often and with images to help guide you on your journey. All images used in this blog post are screenshots from the game Enshrouded.

TIP: Having trouble with an Ancient Spire? Check out my Enshrouded Ancient Spires Overview for how you can reach the top of the towers and unlock Fast Travel.

NOTE: All content below is from BEFORE Hollow Halls Update - version number 510434. Content below is good for anything before March 26th, 2024. Content may still be relevant after March 26th, 2024 - but there may be gaps in the information below as more Lore and Quests were added by developers.

General

The Alchemist’s Theories I

1/5 On The Flame And Its Murmurs

Straight out from the starting point of the game, the Cinder Vault. It’s before you head left down the steps. The northern marker on the map is where they have you place your first base.

This pairs well with the Flame Altar Quest: Claim A Spot For Your Base.

2/5 Flame Shrines

This book is annoyingly far out there, in that it’s far away from the other books in this series. If you have amazing stamina and the best glider in the game, you can easily make it southward from the Ancient Spire – Revelwood Fast Travel tower to this Flame Shrine (the one in the screenshot below). Otherwise, head out for Lone Thistle village, which is north, northeast of the likely familiar Ancient Spire – Springlands Fast Travel.

TIP: The Flame Shrine is a simple jump and glide from the Alchemist’s Tower in Lone Thistle. A potential help can be found at my guide for Alchemist Quest: The Alchemist’s Mortar.

TIP: There’s a LOT of Lore in Lone Thistle. General Lore has TWO more: Balthazar’s Aspirations 1/1 Glider and A Cry for Help 3/3 Never Enough. The Shroud, Elixir, and Elixir Well Lore has TWO: Buried Curse 1/2 I Said Let Go! and 2/2 Unearthed.

3/5 The Ancient Spire, Beacons Of Light

Next to the North opening of the Ancient Spire – Springlands Fast Travel, there is a table with a book to read.

TIP: The Blacksmith Quest: The Ancient Spires can help if you're stuck with how to climb the spire.

4/5 On Elixir Well, The Springs Of The Elixir

This is at the first Elixir Well quest in the game, very near the first base, beside Braelyn Bridge. It’s a book on the table to the left. It seems like this one may be glitched at the moment. Even my new character showed no flame for it, and it doesn’t update the journal, though it does give a popup on screen saying I have the lore… Feel free to also message them about the glitch so they can patch it 😊

TIP: This is best done while doing the Blacksmith Quest: Clear The Elixir Well.

5/5 The Elixir, A Flood Of Woe

Travel to Rookmore. If entering from the east side, turn left toward the large bonfire. The note is on a table behind the fire.

TIP: This quest is also part of the Flame Altar Quests: Flame Altar And Base Improvements [1].

TIP: Also in Rookmore: General Lore To Mend Old Wounds 1/4 A Cold Reception. Scavenger Lore In Sickness And In Health.

The Alchemist’s Theories II

1/5 The Shroud Looms

From the starting point of the game, head for Longkeep. It’s easily accessible, particularly if you follow the road. Head toward the northwestern corner and you’ll find some stairs leading down. It’s located near a tall growth pillar of Mycelium, a tree trunk, and a castle wall with double doors. At the bottom of the stairs and to the left is a table with a book on it.

TIP: More Longkeep General Lore:  To Sleep, Eat, and Rest 1/1 A Good Night’s Rest, Danger: Explosives 1/1 Careful With This Shipment! (between Longkeep and Rookmore), Longkeep 1/1 Falling to Ruin. An Ancients and the Flame Lore: Captain’s Journal 1/4 Captain’s Journal, Day One (the other three pieces of this are nearby, but they aren’t in Longkeep). Lastly, a Nobles and History Lore: Love Letter To Queen Jezmina 2/2 Don’t Leave My Side!.

2/5 War

From the Cinder Vault at the start of the game, follow the path through the cave. When the road splits a second time (one going forward to where your first base should be and the other going right), head right. Follow it to the cliff edge. In a nook to the left, there’s a book to read. This is also near where your first base will be.

TIP: A great time to do this is after finishing the Flame Altar Quest: Claim A Spot For Your Base.

3/5 Smothered and Devoured by Obscurity

On a table in an open area in Saline Springs (much easier to see when you haven’t already read the lore), there’s a book to read!

4/5 Spores and Sickness

This Lore is located in the Egerton Salt Mines. It’s a decent flight from the Ancient Spire - Springlands Fast Travel. Following the round in the Shroud helps if you get lost. Head for the second wooden ramp further back. You’ll want to cross the destroyed bridge when you reach the top. From there, head for the table with the glowing Lore near the silver chest.

TIP: Going up the first ramp will put you close to The Shroud, Elixir, and Elixir Well Lore: The Buzz In The Walls 1/2 I Sense Good Fortune and 2/2 My Faculties, Sharp As Ever!.

TIP: This also connects to the Hunter Quest: Salt Mine Location.

5/5 Metamorphism

From the northeastern edge of the Ancient Spire - Low Meadows Fast Travel, head toward the middle of the tower. There on the base of it you’ll find the book.

TIP: The Alchemist Quest: An Eternal Spell covers how to climb the tower to unlock it.

Letter From Rochelle Anders

1/2 To Father,

Located in Jasper Isles in Umber Hollow, this scroll can be found on a bench across from a bulletin board that also has some Nomad Highlands Lore - Rotting River 1/1 Downstream Of Something Foul. Just cross the bridge from the Shroud Root to reach both pieces of Lore!

TIP: This is part of the Blacksmith Quest: The Blacksmith’s Request.

Quick Disclaimer: I destroyed the Shroud Root so visibility would be easier.

TIP: Stick around the area because there is more Lore here, including the Scavenger Lore: Sister, Sister 1/3 Where Are You, My Sister? and some Nomad Highlands Lore: Amber’s Final Resting Place 1/2 A Chosen Grave Site and 2/2 Our Dearest Amber; Rotting River 1/1 Downstream Of Something Foul; Lake Of The Nomad Highlands 1/1 Creation Of A Lake; and lastly As Above So Below 1/2 Umber Hollow Rumors.

2/2 Letter Delivered

Deliver the letter to Oswald Anders (the Blacksmith). He will have some fun dialogue, which you can check out on my Blacksmith Quest: The Blacksmith’s Request.

Honey Misery

1/1 No Honey!

Just outside of “Far Away Frey” Tavern and inside Brittlebush is a bulletin board with a single piece of Lore (beside my avatar’s head in the background). Brittlebush is southeast of the Ancient Spire - Nomad Highlands Fast Travel.

TIP: You can also find the General Lore: On Fertile Ground 3/3 Ring Obtained (not in city, but nearby), Emily Fray’s Tavern 1/3 Emily Fray’s Diary, Entry 1 and 2/3 Emily Fray’s Diary, Entry 2 (not int city, and a bit far); The Shroud, Elixir, and Elixir Well Lore: Elin’s Warning 1/1 The Walls Are Alive!, Kindlewastes Well Prospects 2/3 You Fool (not int city, and a bit far); Kindlewastes Lore: The Oasis 1/3 A Hopeful Beginning (not in city, and a bit far).

The Greatest Game

1/1 The Greatest Game

This is unlocked as a Items, XP, and Loot Quest: The Greatest Game. This quest became available after finishing the Carpenter Quest: Sun Temple Stories.

Well Blocks

1/2 How to Build an Elixir Well

The Carpenter, Cade Hawthorn, initiates this Lore / Quest. (He has it as a dialogue option.) The Well Blocks are part of the Building Block Quest: Well Blocks - Well Block.

2/2 Blocks Retrieved

Retrieve the Well Blocks from the Elixir Well, which’ll be marked on your map for you. Once you loot the blocks from a chest, that’s that - for the quest that is! The Carpenter has more to say when you return to him. Yes, it is the same dialogue.

TIP: Linked to Building Block Quest: Well Blocks - Well Block.

On Fertile Ground

1/3 Dreaming

Located at Rose Shell Burrow in the Kindlewastes. The easiest way to travel here is from the Ancient Spire - Kindlewastes Fast Travel. Once at the location, look for the open grate on the roof. Dropping down, head for the table that has the glowing red  After completing this Lore, you’ll need to head to Emily Fray, the Farmer.

TIP: Reading this Lore will trigger the Items, XP, and Loot Reward Quest: On Fertile Ground.

2/3 Emily Fray’s Lost Ring

Talking to Emily Fray, the Farmer will complete this portion of the Lore.

TIP: This is also part of the Items, XP, and Loot Reward Quest: On Fertile Ground.

3/3 Ring Obtained

Obtaining the ring will complete this part of the Lore. The ring itself is at an unmarked location, so it can be a bit tricky to find. The location is southeast of Brittlebush in the Shroud. Luckily, it isn’t too far into it, so you’ll have an easy time breaking free of it. Once at the location, there are barrels to blow up (yay!). Looting the silver chest gives you the ring Mother’s Eye, making this Lore, complete!

TIP: More details on where to find the ring can be found on my Items, XP, and Loot Reward Quest page: On Fertile Ground.

Emily Fray’s Tavern

1/3 Emily Fray’s Diary, Entry 1

This book is beside a bed inside “Far Away Frey” Tavern, which is inside of Brittlebush. Brittlebush is southeast of the Ancient Spire - Nomad Highlands Fast Travel. The diary is in the bedroom on the first floor and to the right. You should have a fun surprise in your silver chest. I already looted mine :P

TIP: You can also find the General Lore: Honey Misery 1/1 No Honey!, On Fertile Ground 3/3 Ring Obtained (not in city, but nearby), Emily Fray’s Tavern 2/3 Emily Fray’s Diary, Entry 2 (not int city, and a bit far); The Shroud, Elixir, and Elixir Well Lore: Elin’s Warning 1/1 The Walls Are Alive!, Kindlewastes Well Prospects 2/3 You Fool (not int city, and a bit far); Kindlewastes Lore: The Oasis 1/3 A Hopeful Beginning (not in city, and a bit far).

2/3 Emily Fray’s Diary, Entry 2

In an unmarked part of the Kindlewastes, you’ll find a small cluster of buildings. Inside the mostly intact house is a book on a table (my torch is under it to try and show where the glow should be, lol). Location is North of Brittlebush.

TIP: You can also find the General Lore: Honey Misery 1/1 No Honey!, On Fertile Ground 3/3 Ring Obtained (not in city, but nearby), Emily Fray’s Tavern 1/3 Emily Fray’s Diary, Entry 1; The Shroud, Elixir, and Elixir Well Lore: Elin’s Warning 1/1 The Walls Are Alive!, Kindlewastes Well Prospects 2/3 You Fool (not int city, and a bit far); Kindlewastes Lore: The Oasis 1/3 A Hopeful Beginning (not in city, and a bit far).

3/3 Emily Fray’s Diary, Entry 3

At another Caravan Camp, this one southeast (by 45 degrees) of the Ancient Spire - Nomad Highlands Fast Travel, is another book from Emily. This one is located in one of the back tents and is resting on a table next to a chest… your chest should be unopened >_>

TIP: Also here is the Nobles and History Lore: Recipe For Love 1/1 Grilled Spiced Yucca.

Bridge Construction Report

1/2 Spectacular Progress is Being Made

After crossing over Braelyn Bridge, take the right path and head straight for the tent. There’s a note on the table inside. Head back to the Carpenter for the second part of this Lore / a treasure hunt.

TIP: Finding this Lore may also unlock the Items, XP, and Loot Reward Quest: Bridge Construction Report from the Carpenter, once you obtain him.

2/2 Carpenter’s “Signature”

Complete the first Lore (above) to unlock the dialogue at the Carpenter. He’ll tell you some Lore and of a treasure spot.

TIP: More on this Lore and its Loot can be found at the Items, XP, and Loot Reward Quest: Bridge Construction Report.

Searching for Hidden Tombs

1/3 Imagine This:

The path straight out from Braelyn Bridge leads to a Scavenger wall. Hack your way through the wall to the note on a table, or use a grappling hook. Either way works.

2/3 Misfortune Strikes Like Lightning

Just North of the Ancient Spire – Springlands Fast Travel location, there is a small camp with a book on the ground next to a body. It’s just off the main road.

3/3 I Need Your Help

Northeast of the Ancient Spire – Springlands Fast Travel, the Hill of Scavengers has a ‘note’ that is on the outer wall of their fort. You can jump around like a crazed fool, like I did, or just use your grappling hook and hook shot up to it like a pro. Anyway, it’s a bit buried by scrap metal, but it works.

TIP: There's one more piece of Lore here! The Scavenger Lore: The Rumors Are True 1/1 The Gorger!.

TIP: Entering Hill of Scavengers also starts the Alchemist Quest: The Alchemist's Rumors.

Well Rested

1/1 To Eat and Rest

Oswald Anders, the Blacksmith, talks to you in your base early on in the game. Simply select the dialogue “Well Rested” to hear it.

Balthazar’s Aspirations

1/1 Glider

On the top floor of the tower is a scroll on a bench. This is the Lore you seek. The location is closest to Lone Thistle and a Flame Shrine with a piece of Lore.

TIP: A potential help can be found at my guide for Alchemist Quest: The Alchemist’s Mortar.

TIP: There’s a LOT of Lore in this area. General Lore has TWO more: The Alchemist’s Theories I 2/5 Flame Shrines and A Cry for Help 3/3 Never Enough. The Shroud, Elixir, and Elixir Well Lore has TWO: Buried Curse 1/2 I Said Let Go! and 2/2 Unearthed.

Gravewalker

1/1 One Foot in the Grave

Inside the church’s basement in Woodgard, follow the stairs to a table in a nook with a book to read.

TIP: Don't forget to checkout more of the General Lore here: Hidden Building Blocks 1/1 The Church was Destroyed! and To Mend Old Wounds 2/4 A Refuge and 3/4 A New Season; and the Ancients and the Flame Lore: One Last Journey 1/3 My Final Journey.

TIP: This area also has the Building Block Quest: Hidden Building Blocks - Stone Shingle Roof Block.

Hidden Building Blocks

1/1 The Church was Destroyed!

In Woodgard, there is a building near the top of the Shroud that has a note on a table just inside the door. It isn’t far from an exit, so if you’ve gone too far into the Shroud, well, you’ve gone too far. Reading this Lore will start the Building Block Quest: Hidden Building Blocks - Stone Shingle Roof Block.

TIP: More General Lore: Gravewalker 1/1 One Foot in the Grave and To Mend Old Wounds 2/4 A Refuge and 3/4 A New Season, and some Ancients and the Flame Lore: One Last Journey 1/3 My Final Journey.

To Sleep, Eat, and Rest

1/1 A Good Night’s Rest

Longkeep, near the first Cinder Vault and your first base, there is a well in the middle of the destroyed town. Look for the fire in the building and head toward it. On the table on the other side is a book.

TIP: More Longkeep General Lore: The Alchemist’s Theories II 1/5 The Shroud Looms, Danger: Explosives 1/1 Careful With This Shipment!

Danger: Explosives

1/1 Careful With This Shipment!

There are multiple ways to reach this solitary home. Simply follow the path from a Flame Shrine, deviate a bit from Longkeep, or glide down from the tower (Ancient Spire – Springlands Fast Travel).

TIP: More Longkeep General Lore: The Alchemist’s Theories II 1/5 The Shroud Looms, To Sleep, Eat, and Rest 1/1 A Good Night’s Rest, Longkeep 1/1 Falling to Ruin.

Longkeep

1/1 Falling to Ruin

In Longkeep, just before leaving and heading for the bridge and located in the back corner, there is a wagon with a scroll on the back.

TIP: More Longkeep General Lore: The Alchemist’s Theories II 1/5 The Shroud Looms, To Sleep, Eat, and Rest 1/1 A Good Night’s Rest, Danger: Explosives 1/1 Careful With This Shipment! (between Longkeep and Rookmore).

A Cry for Help

1/3 Ointments

Upon entering Ferndale (north, northwest of Ancient Spire – Springlands Fast Travel) there are two notes on a bulletin board straight ahead. This is one of them. The second piece of lore is beside it (2/3 Protection Against the Shroud), making this Lore easier to obtain!

TIP: Also here is the Scavenger Lore: Fortified 1/1 I Will Defend My House! which is connected to the Items, XP, and Loot Reward Quest: Fortified.

2/3 Protection Against the Shroud

This is the second note on the bulletin board that's in Ferndale. See the above description for details.

3/3 Never Enough

This one is located in Balthazar The Alchemist’s tower near Lone Thistle. It’s a fair glide from the Ancient Spire - Springlands Fast Travel. Once you make your way to the tower, simply go up two flights of stairs. Nestled between some pots beside an alchemy station you can’t just have is the note.

TIP: While you’re here, feel free to check out the Alchemist Quest: The Alchemist’s Mortar.

TIP: There’s a LOT of Lore in this area. General Lore has TWO more: The Alchemist’s Theories I 2/5 Flame Shrines and Balthazar’s Aspirations 1/1 Glider. The Shroud, Elixir, and Elixir Well Lore has TWO: Buried Curse 1/2 I Said Let Go! and 2/2 Unearthed.

Seed of Suspicion

1/1 I Buried it Deep

In Harvest Homestead, there is a big house with rats in the basement. On the much safer first floor is a room near the front entrance with a note on a desk (screenshot has my torch in it to help show where the note is). Reading this Lore will also start the Items, XP, and Loot Quest: Seed Of Suspicion.

To Mend Old Wounds

1/4 A Cold Reception

In Rookmore, just before leaving through the North gate, there is a table on the right with a note on it.

TIP: This quest is also part of the Flame Altar Quests: Flame Altar And Base Improvements [1].

TIP: Also in Rookmore - General Lore: The Alchemist’s Theories I 5/5 The Elixir, A Flood Of Woe. Scavenger Lore: In Sickness And In Health 1/1 In Sickness And In Health.

2/4 A Refuge

In Woodgard, there’s a bench outside the church with a single paper on it. The location is easily accessible with a quick glide West from Ancient Spire - Springlands Fast Travel. You may reach the town of Harvest Homestead next to it first, but they’re fairly close by to one another.

TIP: You can find more General Lore here: Gravewalker 1/1 One Foot in the Grave, Hidden Building Blocks 1/1 The Church was Destroyed!, To Mend Old Wounds 3/4 A New Season, and some Ancients and the Flame Lore: One Last Journey 1/3 My Final Journey.

3/4 A New Season

Inside the same church in Woodgard, on the first floor at the back of the hall is a book to read.

TIP: Other General Lore here includes: Gravewalker 1/1 One Foot in the Grave, Hidden Building Blocks 1/1 The Church was Destroyed!, To Mend Old Wounds 2/4 A Refuge, and some Ancients and the Flame Lore: One Last Journey 1/3 My Final Journey.

4/4 My Dearest Helěn

This one is easiest to get to if you follow a dirt road up the mountain. The same dirt road splits off toward a Shroud Root, so that’s nice. The Flame Sanctum has two skeletons near a bench on the left side and a note on the bench.

TIP: Reaching this location is technically part of the Flame Altar Quest: Flame Altar And Base Improvements [1]. I mention how to reach it as a tip briefly at the end of the quest. This may be helpful if you are having trouble reaching this location.

Mixed Stones

1/1 Where’s the Material?

Located at the Ruined Bridge, just at the entrance, is the book to read for this Lore. It’s just outside of Lupa’s Lair, which is all straight south of the Ancient Spire - Nomad Highlands Fast Travel.

TIP: There are two more pieces of Lore in Lupa's Lair, which is nearby. Scavenger Lore: Tanning Station 1/1 Tanning Station Recipe. Nomad Highlands Lore: Captured By Lupa 1/1 They Terrorize The Roads!

Gift Of The Tide

1/1 Shield Found

Thanks to a friendly online tip, I was able to find this Lore! Anyway, this one is difficult. Grind Teeth Grotto is a LONG glide from Ancient Spire - Revelwood Fast Travel. It’s barely doable for me, and I have a ring that gives me extra mana, Updraft Skill and Double Jump Skill. Even then, it’s a pain. There are no roads, that I found anyway, that go to this location. It also has a river of Shroud Water, the lava like stuff, which makes this area treacherous.

Once you reach Grind Teeth Grotto, I suggest taking out the Shroud Root at the end of the winding tunnel. Then, backtrack to screenshot 2 and 3. You’ll need to jump down to the opposite shore. There’s a tunnel on that side that heads up. Follow it, and it’ll lead you to a golden chest. This Lore is accomplished by obtaining the shield Riptide within the chest.

Hunter’s Notes

1/3 Long Way From Home

This Lore is the third in a series of Abandoned Hunter Camps. Instead of heading right, head left of the stairs. Next to the chest is a stool with a single page resting on top.

TIP: This location also has The Shroud, Elixir, and Elixir Well Lore: Lost In The Shroud 3/5 Talion!.

TIP: This location is also part of the Items, XP, and Loot Reward Quest Lost In The Shroud.

2/3 A Sleepless Night

Located north of the Ancient Spire – Revelwood Fast Travel. This note is found inside a hidden cave which, after you stab or burn some spiderwebs, leads to the Abandoned Hunter Camp. There is also the Hand Spindle here, which is a different quest, so odds are good you’ll have a proper quest marker for this place eventually.

TIP: Reading this Lore will unlock Items, XP, and Loot Quests: A Crucial Investigation and Lost In The Shroud.

TIP: This location also connects to the Hunter Quest: The Hunter’s Hand Spindle.

3/3 Leave the Rot Behind

This Abandoned Hunter Camp is a simple glide away from Westcott (which has General Lore: Tavern Stories 1/2 Martha’s Diary, Entry 1 and 2/2 Martha’s Diary, Entry 2). A single tent has a lonely page resting on a tiny table.

TIP: This location also connects to the Hunter Quest: The Hunter’s Hand Spindle.

Tavern Stories

1/2 Martha’s Diary, Entry 1

Travel to Westcott; it’s far to the north of the Ancient Spire – Springlands Fast Travel tower. In the upstairs area, there are diary pages on a table in a relatively empty room. It’s in the same house as the 2nd entry - 2/2 Martha’s Diary, Entry 2.

TIP: This location also plays an important role in the Hunter Quest: The Hunter’s Hand Spindle.

2/2 Martha’s Diary, Entry 2

This Lore is in Westcott and is in the same building as the first piece 1/2 Martha’s Diary, Entry 1. In the kitchen on the first floor are pages from the diary to read.

TIP: Don't forget to check out the Abandoned Hunter Camp nearby for General Lore: Hunter’s Notes 3/3 Leave the Rot Behind.

TIP: This location, Westcott, also plays an important role in the Hunter Quest: The Hunter’s Hand Spindle.
